The big picture
Bitcoin closed Thursday at $79,784, down 2.25% from $81,624, as trading volume surged to $39.4 billion β the highest in months. The 24-hour swing saw BTC peak at $82,108 before sliding to $78,706. The Fear & Greed Index remained at 74 (Greed territory), and BTC Dominance held steady at 59.2%.
Whale activity accelerated sharply: tracked whales moved 142,011 BTC across 3,129 transactions in the 24-hour window β 32.96% above the 7-day average of 106,805 BTC. On-chain structure currently sits in what we label mid-cycle neutral, with the closest historical analogue being the week of April 1, 2019. Among the largest moves, a 3,197 BTC wallet-to-wallet transfer ($255M) occurred at 18:37 UTC, followed by a 2,929 BTC inflow onto an exchange ($233M) at 18:48 UTC. A second exchange deposit of 2,171 BTC ($173M) arrived at 14:22 UTC. The top five moves totaled 11,625 BTC ($927.5 million).
Net exchange flow ran positive at 3,886 BTC ($310M) into exchanges β a reversal from recent outflows. Gross flows showed 21,681 BTC arriving at exchanges versus 17,795 BTC departing, suggesting distribution-side positioning. Notably, wallet-to-wallet transfers dominated at 95,685 BTC, indicating significant OTC or internal repositioning activity. Among tracked whales, 386 flipped toward distribution this week (net 146,042 BTC out), while 306 turned accumulation-side (net 116,902 BTC in), reflecting mixed conviction.
Stablecoin whale flows showed USDC transfers of $34.94 billion across 3,658 transactions (Ethereum-only, β₯$1M each), with $193 million flowing toward exchanges versus $48 million departing β a 4:1 inflow bias. Tokenized-treasury holdings saw a net burn of $4.08 million over 7 days, with the Ondo-issued OUSG (treasury) shedding $9.58 million in redemptions while USDY (treasury) attracted $5.50 million of new capital. An additional 1,061.9 BTC entered the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem via wrapped tokens over the week, suggesting cross-chain demand for leveraged or yield positions.
What to watch: continued exchange inflow velocity and whether whales sustain distribution-side positioning at current price levels, as well as any rebound in wrapped-BTC demand or tokenized-treasury appetite.
What to watch tomorrow
Monitor exchange inflows for signs of sustained distribution, and track whether whales renew accumulation-side activity if price stabilizes below $80K.
